Back And Leg Pain Requires Injections And Cold Packs For
Relief
Back pain may be due to an inflamed piriformis muscle that
helps to rotate the hip and leg outwardly and also stabilizes the region of the
pelvis and when inflamed, it may become hard and causes nerve-related sciatica
due to it pressing against the sciatic nerve. There is however no need to have
surgery to treat an inflamed piriformis and one can find relief through ice or
heat or through taking non-steroidal and anti-inflammatory drugs.
Five Percent Of Americans May Have Felt Back And Leg Pain
Once In Their Lives
It is believed that as many as five percent of the American
population have experienced back pain and it is believed that in their
lifetime, they have a high percentage chance of experiencing back and leg pain.
Sometimes, this back and leg pain may be severe though mostly it is of a milder
nature. Common causes of back and leg pain include herniated disk in the lumbar
spine, spinal stenosis for back pain and deep vein thrombosis and restless
legs, for leg pain.
To find relief from back and leg pain, the patient may need
to have epidural injections of glucocorticoids, though the efficacy of such
therapy is as yet unproven but are nevertheless a reasonable alternative where
back and leg pain limits the functioning in the patient. Back and leg pain
should be taken seriously and back pain is often associated with many illnesses
and may even cause serious disability as well as mounting medical bills. Back
pain is the second most common affliction known to mankind, after common cold.
When there is pinching in the spinal nerve in the low back,
it can be related to severe leg pain and pain that radiates down the leg is
known as sciatica and, if there is loss of function of the nerve, the patient
is also at risk of losing his or her reflexes, sensation as well as muscle
strength. Back and leg pain may often be very intense and leg pain may increase
as the patient walks or even stands and may be relieved through sitting.
Leg pain may be of different types and include groin pull,
hamstring pull or tear and quadriceps pull or tear. Groin pulls results in pain
in the upper inner thigh muscle and could be symptomatic of overuse. To
overcome it, one would need to be patient and it may require gentle stretching
as well as muscle strengthening. The hamstring pull or tear occurs when the
patient experiences pain in the rear portion of the thigh and may cause the
patient to have difficulty while he or she tries to extend the leg and will
feel a certain amount of pain, while doing so. One can get relief through use
of ice. Back and leg pain are often very painful and requires keeping a good
posture as well as taking adequate care when performing activities that may
aggravate the back or leg.
